Wind chill -50 degrees
Altitude 12,000ft (effective)
Not to be repeated by me!
Running on the Polar Plateau Three layers of material were worn on my upper body – a light thermal layer, a thin fleece layer and an outer windproof shell with ventilation zips. Two layers were worn on my legs – thin thermals and a windproof pants. A balaclava, facemask and goggles covered my face and a pair of polypro gloves protected my hands.
The race organiser’s camp on Antarctica, called Patriot Hills, is situated close to the Ellsworth mountains. This picture shows the hills that overlook the camp.
